At the heart of any Maybach is its 60-degree V-12 engine. Technical advances include a cold-start fuel-injection system in which the driver pumps a dash knob to squirt a bit of fuel into the intake manifolds. There’s a floating oil-level indicator, and all of the accessories are gear-driven, with the generator and water pump located in the valley of the vee. Vacuum-boosted power brakes required some acclimation and frequent adjustment, as did the vacuum-selected transmission (operated via steering-wheel-mounted levers and a floor-mounted lever for forward, neutral, and reverse). Purchase of a new Maybach included an eight-day training class to teach the driver to operate, adjust, maintain, and repair the advanced systems on the Maybach. (Maybe BMW needs such a course for iDrive.)
