It’s been long-rumored but has now been made officially official at the 2008 New York auto show: The next-gen Nissan Cube will be coming to the U.S. starting in 2009.
The photos shown here are of a electric-powered concept version of the current model which was shown in New York. The Cube, which is currently on sale in Japan, is based on Nissan’s small-car B platform and powered by a 95-hp, 1.4-liter four-cylinder. It comes with either a four-speed automatic or an optional CVT. For size reference, the current Cube is about an inch longer and—headroom elitists, take notice—10 inches taller than a Mini Cooper.
No word on what will power the U.S. model, but it will need significantly more suds to keep up with and its obvious competitor in cubism, the 158-hp Scion xB. We also hope the sweet wraparound rear window carries over to the new model.
