The BMW bucks the trend toward repeat victors in the readers’ poll. We tested the 1600 in February and said then that it was the best $2447 sedan on the market. Since then we’ve tested two variants on this same theme— the BMW Alpina ( C/D, December); a hot-rodded version of the small sedan, and the 2002 ( CID, April). Neither did anything to dissuade us from our original opinion of the car; if anything we’ve become even fonder of this surprising little sedan. It handles better than most sports cars, there’s more room inside than most intermediate sedans and there’s an sohc engine that goes like stink and goes forever—all for less than $2500.
